Staying in Carapungo puts you closer to Mitad del Mundo than almost any hotel in Quito: a 20–30 minute drive, or a direct bus from the neighborhood's own interchange. No crossing half the city — the equator monument is practically next door.
The direct bus from the Carapungo interchange
From the Carapungo interchange on the Panamericana Norte (next to Portal Shopping), a bus signed "Mitad del Mundo" runs the Av. Simón Bolívar extension all the way to San Antonio de Pichincha. The fare is about $0.40 and the ride takes around 45 minutes. It leaves from the same stop as the airport bus — if you followed our guide on getting to the hostal, you already know it.
The classic tourist route — Metrobús to La Ofelia, then the "Mitad del Mundo" bus — exists too, but from Carapungo it means backtracking into the city. The direct bus along the Simón Bolívar is shorter and skips the north-central traffic.
By car or taxi: 20–30 minutes
Driving, the Av. Simón Bolívar extension links Carapungo to Av. Manuel Córdova Galarza and drops you in San Antonio de Pichincha in 20–30 minutes. If you'd rather take a taxi or a ride-hailing app, message us on WhatsApp and we'll arrange a trusted driver — same as we do for the airport.
Entry, hours and what to expect
Entry to Ciudad Mitad del Mundo costs $5 per adult and $2.50 for children and seniors (verified July 2026 on the official site). It's open 365 days a year; on weekends there are cultural events and the grounds fill with Quito families. Our standing advice: go early on a weekday and you'll have the monument, the museums and the one-foot-in-each-hemisphere photo almost to yourself.
With a car or taxi you can add the Pululahua viewpoint, a few minutes past the monument — an inhabited volcanic crater almost nobody expects to find this close.
Sleep next to the equator line
We're a family-run hostal with 5 double rooms from $10 a night, 20–30 minutes from both the airport and Mitad del Mundo — the most practical base on Quito's north side. For more local ideas, see things to do near Carapungo.
